COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A couple was found dead in the backyard of a home near Moon Road, following a murder-suicide, according to police.

Columbus police say a man and woman identified as Jeffery Gilbert, 25, and Lora Gilbert, 26, were both found dead at the home on Lyn Drive around 9 a.m. on Tuesday during a welfare check.

The couple had a hearing in divorce court Tuesday morning, but they did not show up, and that's what prompted the welfare check by the man's mother.

"The people here, this is their residence or a place they stay, a family member called concerned about one of them," said Major J.D. Hawk of Columbus Police Department.

Both victims suffered from gunshot wounds according to Muscogee County Coroner, Buddy Bryan. Police say Jeffery shot his wife and then shot himself after purchasing a gun at a local store on Monday.

The couple also has two young school-aged children who were not at home when the incident happened.

Police say the couple is believed to be dealing with a volatile divorce situation.

During the investigation, Hawk said  "the investigators are just trying to get to the bottom and find out what happened. This is not some random act or anything. The two individuals knew each other. It was an unfortunate event, but the neighborhood does not need to be concerned."
