UPDATE: Police say toddler hit and killed on Bond Ave. when family member pulled into driveway

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus police say a 22-month-old boy was playing in the driveway of a home when a Ford Explorer pulled into the parking space and hit him Tuesday afternoon.

Zakai Cook died from a blunt force head injury. Police say Cook's father was behind the wheel of the vehicle that hit him.

According to police, Cook was in the driveway of his family's home when his dad pulled in.

The neighbor, right across the street from the home said her husband heard it all happen.

"Wow, he hadn't even started growing yet. Wow. It's just sad," said Willie Cobbs.

"My husband said he heard the man scream and saw the man pick the child up and take him in the house. As soon as he got in the house he started screaming call 911, call 911," explained neighbor Linda Mayberry.

CPD says the child was taken to Piedmont Regional Health where he later died. Those in the area say the loss of a child is just heartbreaking.

"I said, the baby? It instantly just slapped me in my stomach because I watched them every day. He was curious, you know what I mean. He was a happy baby," said another neighbor.

"I'm sick. I saw the kids out playing in the driveway. I just believe you don't need to leave a 22-month-old out of your sight," Mayberry commented.

Columbus police say it's still too early to determine if any charges will be filed in this death.
