Military Matters: Ft. Benning plans massive Independence Celebration for 100th anniversary

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Fort Benning is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

So why not blow it out with a huge fireworks show? Officials are one step ahead of you.

Post officials are planning a top-notch Independence Celebration set for Saturday, June 23.

The event begins at 4:00 p.m. at York Field and is geared toward celebrating Benning's Centennial.

Musical acts are included this year, Flo Rida, 3 Doors Down and Big & Rich with Cowboy Troy.

As always, the Silver Wings will conduct aerial demonstrations and Rangers will perform high-speed insertion and extraction operations.

You can even jump from an Airborne Training Tower if you like.

All sorts of food and beverage will be available for purchase, a petting zoo will feature the world's largest horse.

It all wraps up with the largest, grandest fireworks show ever at Fort Benning.

The event is happening at the end of June and not July 4 to give soldiers a chance to spend time with their own families on that holiday itself.
