PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Michelle Canaan says it is the best Mother's Day gift she could have ever received.
"I can't find words to explain it. I mean it's just overflowing with joy. Just knowing my background and stuff like that. To know my child got a full scholarship to Yale? Come on. I tell everybody," Canaan said of her daughter's accomplishment.
Her eighteen-year-old daughter, Davornne Lindo, now has a full ride to Yale University. She says she was checking her email for a status update of an application that she submitted to the Ivy League college and was shocked to learn that she, a student at Central High School in Phenix City, was awarded a full scholarship.
"It's something that hasn't really been done from this area before. It's somewhere that many people don't get to go to. It's an opportunity that's unreal," explained Lindo.
Her mom says the family came to America from Jamaica when Lindo was three-months-old. she says she made the decision to provide a better life for her family. They say throughout her academic career, Lindo never received anything less than an 'A.'
She says when she submitted her application, she still had her doubts.
"It said status update, and I said 'Oh, let me open this rejection letter.' I opened it with the intentions of getting rejected and it said 'Welcome!'" says Lindo.
"She should be a hero for anyone as far as I'm concerned. She has never gotten into trouble. She's always been optimistic about getting things done. The others look up to her," says grandmother Gloria Thomas.
With the full support of her family, she says she is ready to take on the challenge.
"It's crazy and I'm excited to get started," says Lindo.
Lindo says she will be studying Political Science and hopes to become a Senator one day.
