Columbus fire officials warn public to avoid portion of 14th Ave. following house fire

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – Columbus Fire and EMS were battling a house fire on 14th Avenue neat Warm Springs Road on Monday morning.

Columbus Fire Chief Ricky Shores says battling a fire in this warm weather poses an additional danger for firefighters trying to contain the flames.

"Any time it gets over 90 degrees," Shores said. "It gets difficult to work the troops for more than 15 minutes or so. Then, we've got to rest them for over 40 minutes. It takes a toll on their ability to keep working."

At this time, fire and police crews are working to pinpoint what started the fire.

First responders also had to deal with a large amount of debris scattered across the front of the home.

No word yet on whether there was a person or people inside the house during the fire.
