COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The race for the District 3 seat on Columbus City Council pits two-term incumbent Bruce Huff against newcomer Juanita Upshaw.
Bruce Huff, 61, was born and raised in Columbus. He and his brother run the family-owned business, Charles E. Huff International Funeral Home. Huff is married with two sons.
I'm working now with a new group to get with the kids of south Columbus and try to look at more activities for the kids and redevelopment pieces with the area of south Columbus," Huff said.
Juanita Upshaw is a 63-year-old divorced mother with two sons. She is a doting grandmother and great-grandmother who says although she's only lived in Columbus two-and-a-half years, she's ready to serve.
She works as a home health provider and takes pride in living on the southside.
"The one thing I would like to do is clean up the community. That is a great concern," Upshaw said.
Both candidates were asked what makes them most qualified to run for this seat.
"I have seven-and-a-half years of experience now, Huff said. "I have learned to navigate the system. It takes two to four years to learn to navigate things. How to do business and how to get things done."
"I live over in the deep part of Columbus, Georgia, Upshaw said. "The part where the majority of the crime goes on, litter, vacant houses, and the most poverty."
