COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Spencer Greenwave have a new head football coach, as Justin Newman was named to take over the program on Wednesday.
Newman had been named offensive coordinator this spring by head coach Pierre Coffey, who last month stepped down to take over as assistant principal at Baker Middle School. Newman stepped in and had been running the program on an interim basis.
"He has been running our spring practices," said Spencer principal Jonny Freeman, "and he's bonded with the kids."
Newman was hired to take over the Greenwave offense after being let go as Jordan's head football coach. Newman took the program from and 0-10 record in 2016 to 2-8 in 2017, showing marked improvement with three of those losses coming by a touchdown or less, including a 31-29 defeat at the hands of Class 4A Upson-Lee.
He takes over a program on the rise. Spencer has made the GHSA playoffs each of the past three seasons after missing the postseason 21 straight years.
