RUSSELL COUNTY, AL (WTVM) – A graduating Russell County High School senior has worked hard to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships.
When Sergio Ortiz started school he didn't speak any English and was withdrawn from school. As the son of Mexican immigrants, Sergio says he thought he would grow up to be a laborer.
His parents, along with teachers pressured him to apply himself and to do his best. Now, he has accomplished something no student at Russell County High School as ever achieved.
"It made me feel good about myself. To know that I did that, not only for RSCHS, but I did this for myself," Sergio said.
During free application week, Sergio spent all his free time filling out college applications.
In the end, he was offered $814,000 worth of scholarships from 11 different schools.
