LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - Alabama has several key primary races coming up on June 5.
The Lee County Coroner's race is one of several that people are keeping an eye on.
Incumbent Bill Harris and challenger Wes Goodson are vying for the spot.
"There's just no substitute for experience over the years we've built this office to be what it is today," said Harris.
Goodson believes he can bring a new light to the position.
"I have an associates degree in EMS from Southern Union so that's my background as far as management," said Goodson.
Harris is a lifelong resident of the county of which he's spent numerous years holding the office of coroner.
Goodson believes working with East Alabama Medical Center and a local funeral home gives him the qualifications.
"My experience will help me bring compassion and professionalism to the people of Lee County," said Goodson.
The office is not technically a full-time position, but Harris says in the position he is always on the clock.
"We do everything we can to honor family's request the best we can as long as it falls in the law. This position is all about taking care of the people," said Harris. "We work with the law enforcement. We've got those relationships and the old saying is if it's not broke don't fix it."
Goodson is hoping the people of Lee County are looking for change.
"If you want a new level of professionalism, dedication, and commitment then I am your choice on June 5."
