Georgia Emergency Management Agency gives safety guidelines amid Alberto

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Representatives with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) say they've been actively monitoring Alberto and are encouraging safety guidelines to be followed in the case of rising water and flooding.

Although there have been only patches of rain in the area, the GEMA says, in the event of the weather getting worse, it's important to follow guidelines such as:

  • Know your area’s flood risk.  If unsure, call your local emergency management agency or planning and zoning department.
  • Get a Ready Kit and prepare a portable kit in case you have to evacuate. Plan how you will leave and where you will go if you are advised to evacuate.
  • Plan ahead for pets. Shelters cannot accept pets due to health reasons, so it’s important to find a pet-friendly hotel or make arrangements with family or friends in advance.
