COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Piedmont Columbus Regional hosted a presentation on the opioid crisis Tuesday during its Regional Emergency Response team meeting.
The meeting took place at the Midtown Campus Conference Center.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioids killed more than 42,000 people in 2016 and a total of 40 percent of all opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid. An average of 115 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.
Dr. Patrick O'Neal, commissioner and director of health protection at the Georgia Department of Public Health, gave a presentation on the ongoing opioid crisis. He has over 30 years of experience as a medical professional. O'Neal got his start as a flight surgeon in the Vietnam War.
