Columbus fraternity awards more than $11K in scholarships to local students

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Graduation season may be over, but these students are not leaving for college without receiving praise and a scholarship to help cover their tuition.

This morning, the local chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity awarded eleven students $1,000 each.

All students submitted their applications earlier this year and the chapter's scholarship committee picked the candidates who exemplify community service and academic excellence.

"It was very tough for us to have to pick through those applications and find the top candidates for the scholarship," says Jamal de Saussure, President of the Lambda Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi. "So, it means a whole lot to us that we're able to actually provide scholarships for these young men and women."

The local chapter has been donating scholarships to students since the early 1970s and has raised more than $500,000 for graduates of high schools in Muscogee, Harris and Russell Counties.

All eleven students this year said they knew which major they would pursue their first year of college.
