Piedmont Columbus Regional honors 2 Columbus police officers at First Friday Hero ceremony

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Piedmont Columbus Regional hosted its First Friday Hero presentation to honor two Columbus Police Department officers today.

Officers Zachary Cole and Able Marte pulled an injured man from a burning car after he ran off the road and crashed into another vehicle in East Columbus back in March.

Cole was the first officer to arrive on the scene. As heavy smoke quickly turned into flames inside the car, Cole knew he had to help the man escape. Fearing the car might explode, Marte came to assist.

Both officers pulled the man to a safer distance from the burning car.

"We initially thought we were going to have him cut out by the fire department, but when we got to him again after we moved our cars away for the fire trucks, he began to shimmy out. So, we grabbed him and drug him away from the vehicle. By that point it was fully engulfed," said Cole.

Piedmont Columbus Regional created the First Friday Hero program in 2017 to recognize first responders monthly who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.
