COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM)- The 74th annual Miss Georgia pageant kicked off Saturday starting with a meet and greet. Ninety-nine women and teens in Columbus trying to take home the crown. Although the parade was canceled due to the weather, organizers say it's still a great way to start the week of activities leading up to the pageant.
Cassie Myers, Vice President of Media Relations for the Miss Georgia Pagent says, "The contestants came yesterday and will be here until Father's Day so, they're here for a long time. It's just the kick off for pageant week."
She says it gives those in the community an opportunity to come out and meet and greet with the ladies competing for academic scholarships and the titles of Miss Georgia 2018 and Miss Georgia's Outstanding Teen of 2018. The women came from across the state of Georgia to the fountain city to compete in the Miss Georgia Pageant.
"Columbus is a great city. Why wouldn't we want to have it here? The River Center is perfect. It's more of a central location. It's not too big of a city and it's not too small of a city. We can accommodate," says Myers.
From Tuesday, June 12 through Saturday, June 16. Miss Georgia will be crowned that Saturday night. News Leader Nine's Roslyn Giles will be in attendance helping the contestants as a hostess.
"The Miss Georgia Teen contestant will be crowned on Friday night and Miss Georgia will be crowned Saturday night. Now is just welcoming the girls to the city. A lot of them have never been here before so, it's getting everyone acclimated, introduced and welcomed," says Myers.
They're having rehearsals throughout the weekend, and interviews leading up to the beginning of the competition on Tuesday.
