OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – A two-vehicle head-on collision claimed the life of a Phenix City woman and an Auburn man.
The crash happened on Monday around 11:17 p.m. on US East in Opelika, just outside of the city limits.
Gail Lee, 70, of Phenix City and 32-year-old Ki Tack Lim of Auburn, were killed when their vehicles were involved in the collision.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced both Lee and Lim dead at the scene at 11:45 p.m. Both victims died instantly from multiple blunt force impact injuries.
Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and there were no other occupants of either vehicle. At approximately 11:17 PM, Lee County Sheriff's office received a call of a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lane of US Hwy 280.
Deputies were immediately called to attempt to locate the vehicle and drove up on the accident two minutes later. It appears that Lim was traveling west on the wrong side of the divided highway when he struck Lee head on.
It is not known how long that Lim may have been on the wrong side of the road.
A toxicology analysis will be conducted to determine if alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
The accident remains under investigation by the Lee County Coroner's office and the Alabama State Troopers of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
