FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

Today, June 14, 2018, marks the U.S. Army’s 243rd birthday, making the Army a year older than our country.

Col. Clint Cox came by News Leader 9 to celebrate and share some details on this year’s Fort Benning Independence Celebration.

Col. Cox says that is an Army tradition for the senior soldier and the youngest soldier, wherever you are, to cut a cake celebrating the Army’s birthday.

In addition to celebrating our nation’s independence in a couple of weeks, Fort Benning has been celebrating its 100th year all year long. Because of that, Col. Cox says that everything at this year’s Independence Celebration will be bigger than ever.

From more rides to more food to bigger musical acts with artists Big & Rich, Three Doors Down and Flo Rida, Col. Cox’s promise is looking to be fulfilled.

Those who want to start preparing to be able to get on base before the June 23 celebration can start pre-registering for passes this Friday, June 15. All you need is a picture ID and you can get a pass and be good to go to set up what you will need for the big day.

The only things you cannot bring on base for the celebration are weapons and pets.

You can watch Col. Cox’s full interview in the video above.
