Former Atlanta prison guard sentenced for bribery

ATLANTA (AP) - A guard at the federal prison in Atlanta was sentenced to prison for accepting payments to smuggle contraband for inmates.

Federal prosecutors said in a news release Tuesday that 40-year-old Melvin Thomas was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for smuggling tobacco into the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta. His prison sentence is to be followed by two years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $3,500 fine.

Thomas, who's from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, pleaded guilty to bribery of a public official on April 10. Prosecutors say an inmate paid him about $3,500 to smuggle tobacco into the prison.
