ATLANTA, GA (WALB) -

Kirby Smart, University of Georgia head football coach, is among 20 potential recipients for a national coaching award.

The Bainbridge native is one of the 20 named on a preseason watch list for the Dodd Trophy.

The Dodd Trophy is college football’s most coveted national coaching award, according to a release from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation.

The trophy celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron. The Dodd Awards goes to a coach who stresses the importance of scholarship, leadership, and integrity like Bobby Dodd’s coaching philosophy, the release stated.

Dodd was a former head football coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets for 22 years.

The watch list was created through a selection process by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, according to the release.

A panel, which includes former winners and a Dodd family member, will make a final list of potential recipients at the end of the 2018 season.

The winner of the 2018 Dodd Trophy will be announced during the Chick-fil-A Bowl Week in Atlanta, according to the release.

Smart has been UGA head football coach since 2016.
