Cable guy shoots suspected robber in Houston neighborhood

HOUSTON (KTRK/CNN) – An 18-year-old suspect was shot after he and another person tried to rob two cable repairmen in north Houston, police said.

The two repairmen were working on a cable box around midnight Tuesday when the gunmen approached them.

"It was just real quick. We were expecting the worst," said one of the technicians, who didn't want to be identified because he fears for his life.

He said one of the suspects pointed a gun at his face and fired.

"As he shot off, I was already out of the way, because I was expecting to get shot at already," he said.

After the first bullet barely missed him, he dropped to the ground and started praying, thinking of his family.

"I went down to the ground and that's when he put his knee on my back and hit me on my sides," he said. "I thought it was over. I was expecting to get shot anywhere in the back, or my head, really, the way he had me."

But he said his partner, who has a concealed handgun license, grabbed his own gun and fired back.

"My partner was able to distract him in time," he said.

Police said a gunfight ensued, which resulted in one of suspects being shot in the leg.

That suspect, an 18-year-old, ran down the street and collapsed. He was later transported to the hospital.

The suspect is in critical but stable condition. Charges are expected.

Police are still searching for two other suspects – the other alleged robber and a getaway driver – who were seen driving away in a gray four-door sedan.
