PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) - Police in Phenix City are investigating a hit and run accident that left one man dead.

The incident happened on Stadium Drive in Phenix City and today, family of the victim said they are heartbroken.

Billy Daniel is the man who died. His daughter Anna Taylor says she got a call several weeks ago that no loved one wants to get.

"I just broke down," said Taylor. "It's a heartless thing he did. He hit somebody and didn't even stop."

Taylor said she was born and raised in Phenix City, but recently moved to Colorado with her husband who is in the military. Her father still lived in the Chattahoochee Valley area, but had fallen on hard times and was moving from place to place. She said no matter the circumstances, this should not have happened like it did.

"He had a family, he had a grandchild he will never be able to watch grow up," Taylor said.

Authorities said Daniel appeared to have died from blunt force trauma after being hit by a car just in front of Clover Leaf Apartments.

One of the few eyewitnesses on the scene said she got out of her car to try to get the car's tag number that hit Daniel. However, the car was too quick and kept driving.

After pouring over evidence, Edwin Scott Carden from Smiths Station was arrested in connection to this case. Carden is charged with a felony for leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with physical evidence.

Taylor and her family are asking for the public's help in finding  Daniel's belongings. They said he carried them along wherever he was staying and they are hoping someone can lead them in the right direction.

"I don't see how someone can hit somebody and take off," said Taylor. "You don't think something like that will happen until it does."

The family said they are holding a public memorial for Daniel at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 beside the Phenix City Amphitheater.
