COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The month of September is Sickle Cell Awareness, which is to help focus attention on the need for research and treatment of the disease.
According to the American Society of Hematology, sickle cell disease is an inherited condition that currently affects 70,000 to 100,00 Americans.
On Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, the Association of Sickle Cell Lower Chattahoochee Region held a walk-a-thon as a fundraiser to bring continued awareness and support to the disease.
The walk was held at Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus from 9 a.m. to noon.
Proceeds were collected from participants who registered for the walk and the money raised will go towards helping with awareness of sickle cell disease.
