Iraqi Girl Gets Fitted for a Prosthetic

October 24, 2007

Suham Hassan lost both of her legs in an insurgent mortar attack three years ago.  Hassan lives in Kanan, a small village east of Baghdad.

On October 20th, soldiers escorted her to a nearby hospital to be fitted for a new prosthetic leg.

Capt. Troy Thomas, from Litchfield, Minn., commander of Troop A, 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, gave her a new pair of tennis shoes to go with her new prosthetic.

Hassan's new leg is only meant to be temporary because the shape of her limbs may change over time.

The 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, is assigned to the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, from Fort Benning, Ga., and has been deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom since March.
