Critical Food Shortage in Local Food Banks

November 14, 2007

More than 10,000 people depend on the East Alabama Food Bank to get meals for their families.

Now the bank is operating under a critical shortage. Higher fuel and grocery costs have led to empty shelves at food banks all over the country.

Martha Faupel in Opelika says they don't know if they'll be able to feed everyone this holiday season.

She adds, "This is probably as low a supply as we've had at this time of year I've been with the food bank for 12 years and I have to say I'm more scared this year than any other."

The food bank is encourging the public to pitch in. It's asking for donations of non-perishable items in time for Thanksgiving.
