Suspected Car Arsons in Downtown Columbus

May 12, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) -- The Columbus Fire Department is reporting at least eleven car fires, occuring over the last four days in the city's Historic Downtown District and near the campus of Columbus State University.

Columbus fire officials are investigating these fires as potential acts of arson but as of yet, they have not said whether they believe the fires are related or if they suspect a single arsonist or many. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has been called in to assist.

Meantime, residents in the Historic District have formed a neighborhood watch, in part as a response to the recent rash of car fires and local vandalization.

Business owner and watch member, Donna Comer, tells us the group is modeling themselves after a similar organization in Hilton Heights.
