Accused Killer of Auburn Student in Court

LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WXTX) -- Murder suspect Courtney Lockhart was arraigned in a Lee County courtroom on Wednesday. He is accused of killing an Auburn University freshman earlier this year during an attempted robbery and rape.

Twenty three year old Courtney lockhart, pled not guilty to the capitol murder of 18-year old auburn university freshman Lauren Burk. The not guilty plea wasn't a surprise, what was a surprise is his lawyers did not enter a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. News leader nine has obtained documents showing lockhart's defense team had requested a mental evaluation of their client, to determine if he was fit to stand trial.

In court Wednesday, lawyers asked the judge if it would be okay to amend their not guilty plea to not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect after those mental evaluations took place. udge Jacob walker agreed. In other court business, The judge did not lift a gag order that prevents anyone associated with the case from speaking with the media.

Lochkart is accused in the March shooting death, attempted rape and robbery of 18-year old Auburn freshman Lauren Burk. If convicted he faces death by lethal injection.
