Columbus Police Prepares for Family Day In The Park

June 19, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ga.  (WXTX) - Radio personalities at Davis Broadcasting say they're excited about the annual event, 'Family Day in the Park'.  They say people can expect to enjoy good food, fun, and plenty of music.

"We all know that times are hard for many people and we just wanted to do something fun for everyone.  I know most families don't get to spend a lot time together and we hope this event will change that," said Foxie 105 Radio Personality, DJ Chip.

You may remember two years ago the event was overshadowed by an incident at nearby Peachtree Mall.  An overwhelming crowd and a fight inside the mall forced officials to close it early.  Some blamed it all on crowd overflow from 'Family Day in the Park'.  However, Davis Broadcasting says the event wasn't related to the problems at the mall.

Peachtree Mall General Manager Chris McCoy says they aren't concern about what happen two years ago.  "We believe this is a positive event for the community.  We have a comprehensive security plan here at the mall that is in place for all events in the city," said McCoy.

Columbus Police say they're also gearing up for the event with extra patrols in the area and park this weekend.  "We are expecting a lot of traffic, but we will be out directing it.  We want people to please be on time picking up their kids from the event at five," said Columbus Police Major Wanna Barker-Wright.

Foxie 105 radio personality Vicky James says this will be her first family day and she is looking forward to the event.  "I hear the heat is crazy so we have been telling people to drink lots of water and dress light.  I am looking forward to meeting out listeners," said James.

Family Day in the Park will be held at Cooper Creek Park this Saturday beginning at Noon and it's free.
