June 24, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WXTX) - It's no secret, these days savvy shopping equals savings!

One local Publix store boasts its low prices and more importantly, how consumers can put money back into their pockets from buying its store brand products.

But exactly how true is that and where can you get the best deal?

We put a grocery list together of staple household items like milk, bread and cheese. Plus those things you need to make a meal like meat, veggies and of course some dessert.

We shop at Publix, Piggly Wiggly, Winn Dixie and Wal Mart.

So which store offers the best savings?

At Piggly Wiggly, we find the cheapest name brand and store brand items for $27.72 and $16.43.

But, its store selection is a bit more limited, for example, we could only find one brand of chicken breasts.

Wal-Mart comes next for the cheapest store brands. The totals there, $31.30 (name brand) and $23.40 (store brand).

At Winn-Dixie, the store brands aren't much more expensive, but we see the biggest difference in our totals and the priciest names brands.  We ring up at $37.05 and $24.05.

And lastly, there's Publix it's store brands are the most expensive.

The totals there,  $32.80 and $26.08.
