Gas Run-Outs Increasing

Jun. 24, 2008

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Georgians running out of gas on roadways is a fast growing problem, which insurance experts say can be very dangerous. Allstate Motor Club says the number of Georgians running out of gas has risen 51 percent in the first five months of 2008, as compared to the same period in 2007.

Calls for help nationwide to their auto service for running out of gas increased 52 percent, and speculate that the high cost of gas has drivers trying to stretch too far between fill ups.

Allstate says besides the inconvenience, running out of gas on highways is dangerous. Insurance Agent Lonnie Mathis said "Anytime you pull off the side of the road, or are not completely off the road. And have to step out into the road, you are putting your life at risk there."

The Department of Energy offers tips on improving fuel efficiency like, slow down and save gas.  Your car uses more gas the faster you drive.

2-Keep your car in tune, air filters clean, and tires inflated properly.

3-Use cruise control on highways to maintain constant speed

4-Keep your car light.  An extra 100 pounds in your trunk reduces miles per gallon by 2 percent.
