Fire Heavily Damages Columbus Home

July 10, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WXTX) - Evening showers may have helped a house fire from getting out of control.  Heavy smoke poured from the house, and could be scene from many places in downtown Columbus.

It happened at 29th street and 5th avenue.  Fire officials tell FOX 54, most of the damage was contained to the attic.  Now they're looking into how the fire started.

"It was pretty heavy fire, a lot of smoke, flames when we got here. Looks like, we're not sure what started it.  A lot of damage.  May have some problems here, so we're going to look into it," said Battalion Chief Lester Talley.

Chief Talley tells us one firefighter was taken to the medical center for smoke inhalation.  No word on his condition.

A ladder truck was brought in so firefighters could access the fire from the roof.
