COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) -- The Muscogee County Election Board has completed its recount in the Coroners race, and Bill Thrower has come out on top.
Prior to Monday, the unofficial returns showed current Coroner Thrower ahead by about 300 votes. But a margin of less than one-percent triggers an automatic recount. Thrower won by 211 votes.
Thrower was running for a full term, having served as interim Coroner upon the retirement of James Dunnivant. He faced former Deputy Coroner Ricky Weeks in the Democratic primary. The winner has no Republican opposition in the fall.
Weeks surprised Thrower after last Tuesday's vote, by filing a complaint with the Georgia Ethics Commission for a lack of required campaign documents. Thrower called it an "honest mistake," explaining this is his first political campaign.
