Off to the polls! Alabama Special Elections underway

Aug. 26, 2008

(WTVM) - It's election day for many Chattahoochee Valley Residents.

Mayoral candidates for the city of Opelika are fighting a hard fought-race, releasing several radio and television ads over this week.

Opelika has added 1500 new jobs and 300,000 square feet of retail since the last mayoral election.

"One of our keys as far as planning goes from this point on is that we make sure we balance that healthy growth with maintaining our small town quality of life," said Opelika Mayoral Candidate, Rainer Meadow.

Current Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller remarked, "Planning is a constant process and what I've encouraged our staff and city council to do is not only think about next week and next year but to think 10, 15, 20 years out".

Recent reports of voter fraud in Perry County, Alabama has prompted oversight from the Justice Department.

We're told, monitors will be outside polling places. Officials began investigating Perry County elections after the June 3rd Primary.

Since that time, the state has received several reports of suspicious behavior at the polls and an unusually large number of absentee ballots.

Monitors will also be sent to Bayou la Batre in Mobile County. If you see discrepencies or would like to report cases of voter fraud, contact the Alabama Election & Voter Fraud Hotline at 1-800-274-VOTE or visit its website at
