GA Has Large Number of Working Poor Families

Oct. 14, 2008

ATLANTA, Ga. (WXTX)--- A new national report says 30 percent of Georgia's working families are working poor.

"Still Working Hard, Still Falling Short," funded in part by the nonprofit Annie E. Casey Foundation, estimates nationwide, 42 million adults and children are living in families that earn too little to meet their basic needs.

The report estimates an extra 350,000 working families in Georgia were low-income in 2006 compared to 2002. Georgia ranks 17th among states for the rate of working poor. New Hampshire ranked No. 1.

The report shows that about 40 percent of Georgia's low-income working families have at least one parent without health insurance and 56 percent of low-income working families have housing costs greater than one-third of their income.
