Heart Damage Reversal

There's new hope for patients facing death from
heart
failure.  Ten patients have been treated with implanted mechanical pumps that let their
heart
s rest while drugs
helped repair damage. It took an average of six months on the pump for the
heart
s to recover. The
patients -- once near death -- since have returned to work. Their
heart
s have been functioning normally
for an average of a year, with one patient reaching four years. Most of the patients are in their 50's or
60's and suffered from progressive
heart
failure for many years. A renowned
heart
surgeon, Sir Magdi
Yacoub, told his colleagues about his work at a Berlin meeting of the European Society of Cardiology. His colleagues are impressed, but they say it's too early to tell if the patients have been cured.
