COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Fox 54 is continuing to follow a massive fire that occured early Thursday morning at the old Bibb City Mill on 1st Avenue in Columbus.
About 50 firefighters are still on the scene trying to put out hot spots. Initially, emergency crews were called to investigate an explosion that happened just after midnight. Around eleven response teams, including firefighters from Phenix City, have been battling these flames since 12:30 a.m.
As of right now, the back portion of the mill has collapsed and officials with the fire department say the rest of the structure will most likely fall due to the intensity of the blaze. We're told crews are fighting the fire with the wind and they are asking residents in the surrounding area to keep an eye out for sparks in their yards.
Throughout of the course of night, firefighters were called away a couple of times from the main fire to put out several grass fires and even a home fire on 3rd Avenue.
It's believed the fire will be fought all day. The cause of the fire is not known -- an exact cause may not be known for weeks.
