Nov. 11, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WXTX) -  "Our veterans are the ones who have gotten us this far."

For ninety-one-year-old Lawton Jackson, Veterans Day is a day to look back and remember his comrades who fought alongside him in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

"They have gone before me and you miss them not being around," he said.

After joining the Army in 1941, Jackson testifies to the changes that took place when the Armed Forces went from segregated to integrated.

"We could fight better because we were unified and could do things together," Jackson explained.

Looking around their living room, Jackson and his wife point out all of the things he has brought back home after his tours of duty around the world- tokens of a lifetime dedicated to serving our country.

"His nieces and nephews have followed in his footsteps. I'm proud to be a part of his life in that respect," Mrs. Jackson

"I'm proud and honored to be a part of that group of soldiers that persisted," he said.
