Sudden Deaths Caused By Virus

Nov. 17, 2008

LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WXTX) -- Officers with Alabama's Department of Public Health are attributing three Lee County deaths to viral infections affecting the heart. Since July of this year, three girls, between the ages of 7 and 10, have suddenly died.

The department issued the following statement Friday, urging parents not to worry but to encourage hand-washing and other hygienic practices:

"These tragic occurences are unusual, but at this time do not require any special precautions by the public. Hopefully, additional tests by the CDC will identify the specific type of virus that cause these illnesses. There are several common viral illnesses that usually resolve without serious consequences but which, unfortunately, on rare occasions can result in death."
