Phenix City Passes Smoking Ban

Nov. 18, 2008

PHENIX CITY, AL (WXTX)  -  Phenix City councilors made a decision in a unanimous decision to ban smoking in all public places.

That includes not smoking within 15 feet of a public restaurant or business.  If you violate the ordinance you could be subject to fines.

Surrounding cities like Auburn, Opelika, and Columbus are already smoke-free.  "It's something that should enhance the drawing of customers to our businesses.  I know many people who don't like to eat out around people smoking cigarettes, " said Mayor Sonny Coulter.

The new ordinance will be advertised in the local paper Thursday, and will go into effect in 90 days.
