(WTVM) -- Blood donations are being collected in Columbus, and organizers tell us a lot of people are showing up.
It's part of an effort to save local baseball player, Brent Schoening. The former Columbus High semi-pro ball player has leukemia and is being treated at a hospital in Houston, Texas. His friends and family organized the blood drive at Gold's Gym Elite to send all the b-plus blood to Schoening.
Brent's mother says he'll need a lot of replacement blood for the surgery -- and based on Tuesday's turn-out it looks like he should be set. Another event is being scheduled for this Saturday from nine until five at the Gold's Gym across from Saint Francis hospital.
