Man Charged With Murdering Mentally Challenged Woman

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) -  A local woman is dead following a domestic dispute.  Her alleged killer pled not guilty in Recorder's Court Wednesday morning.

Police say, around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, 51 year-old Ulysses Wiggins shot and killed 24 year-old Catherine Walker at her residence.

Witnesses say Walker was an innocent bystander.

Witnesses add Wiggins was in a dispute with his ex-girlfriend, when he pulled out a gun and shot Walker at a close range.  Police say the bullet struck the woman in her left shoulder and right upper back.

Wiggins alleges Walker got in the middle of the dispute. Police say there was gun powder residue on Walker's wound indicating a close-range shot.  Witnesses say Walker was mentally challenged.

Wiggins is being charged with murder, possession of a firearm by convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of marijuana.

He will remain in the Muscogee County Jail on no bond. The case has been bounded over to Superior Court.
