Auburn Officer Dragged by Vehicle

AUBURN, AL (WXTX) - An Auburn Police officer is recovering from head injuries at Columbus Regional Medical Center after being dragged by a car Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say the officer pulled over a suspicious person who then drove off with the officer still hanging on to the car.

Police have arrested 59 year-old John Henry Knight and charged him with assault in the first degree. Knight is currently in the Lee County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.

Police received a call around 3:00 P.M. on Wednesday, saying that an officer was injured, and lying in the road. Police say Officer Adams was dragged about a block after stopping a suspicious person.

"He was holding onto the door and the vehicle sped away very quickly, and at that point he could not let go. He was thrown from the vehicle once it made the right hand turn, causing head injuries when he hit the asphalt, and curb on West Glenn Avenue," Assistant Chief Tommy Dawson, Auburn PD, said.

Investigators say he officer was attempting to pull over the suspect on Vine Avenue. Later, police tracked down the suspect on Westview Drive in Auburn. Officer Adams is recovering at Columbus Regional Medical Center, where his injuries are considered to be non-life threatening.
