Hyles Takes Oath as Judge

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) -- Columbus's newest judge was sworn into office Monday, in front of hundreds of people at the Government Center.

Attorney Stephen Hyles takes over the Municpal Court judgeship, after several years of private practice as well as service on Columbus Council.  He defeated Judge Haywood Turner in the November election.

During the ceremony, Hyles shared with the crowd his purpose in serving as a judge: "To hear and decide actual cases and controversies, to do so justly and fairly as God gives me the light to see it."

Due to recent budget cuts, Hyles will not be working simply on city court cases.  A new Georgia law allows him to also help with the Superior Court docket, which will alleviate the workload on other judges.
