PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -  The Phenix City Police Department will soon be under new leadership.

Brian McGarr now says he'll retire on March 1, 2009.

McGarr was appointed chief in April of 2006 and has been with the department for 29 years, working his way thru the ranks.

We're told assistant police chief Ray Smith will take over until the city manager appoints a new chief.
