Church Fires Ruled Arson

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WXTX) - Alabama Fire Marshal Ed Paulk has ruled arson in the fires that destroyed two rural churches in Chambers County over the weekend.

No suspects have been identified, but Paulk said Wednesday investigators are pursuing leads.

A fire at 4:39 a.m. Saturday destroyed the Union Hill CME Church near the community of Oak Bowery. About 7 miles away, a second fire was reported about 11 a.m. Saturday that destroyed the Liberty CME Church.

Paulk said no connection has been officially made between the two fires.

Investigators also found no immediate link to an arson attempt Saturday in nearby Lee County at Pitts Chapel United Methodist Church in Salem.
