Tornado impacts Columbus hospital count

COLUMBUS, GA, (WTVM) - Damage from this week's storms will make a Columbus hospital busier than usual for awhile.

West Central Georgia Regional Hospital will take new patients which normally go to Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville.  The state Department of Human Resources reports a tornado struck the Thomas County hospital early Thursday.

No one inside the hospital was hurt, but one adult mental health building has serious structural damage.  That building included forensic patients, who have now been transferred to West Central.

Central State Hospital in Milledgeville also is being used as a diversion point for new patients.  The DHR reports 158 patients remain safely in the Thomasville hospital.
