BBB warns about stimulus phishing scams

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The IRS is issuing a warning for consumers.

Officials say ignore any emails claiming stimulus money is coming your way.

They say the emails are not from the IRS and that there aren't any stimulus payments going directly to the public.

Leonard Crain with the Better Business Bureau told News Leader 9 the emails are an attempt to steal your identity--- a classic phishing scam.

"Once you've provided your information, in a lot of cases, you've given access to your bank account or your social security number or those kinds of things," he said.

Downloading any attachments with the scam emails may also lead to viruses on your computer.
