Congressman's wife received pay intended for son-in-law

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - City auditor, John Redmond told News Leader 9 that he found discrepancies in a routine payroll audit.

He added that Vivian Creighton Bishop, wife of congressman Sanford Bishop, received more than $7,000 in pay intended for her son-in-law, Stephen Reese.

City records show Reese was paid through last July as an assistant for the Junior Marshall Program, which is funded in part by a federal grant secured by the congressman.

The GBI is investigating.

Columbus' city attorney confirms the checks were deposited in an account in the name of Vivian Creighton Bishop, but he says they don't know if anything illegal or improper was done.

Meanwhile, payment has been suspended for Bishop's stepdaughter, who's now on payroll with the Junior Marshal Program.
