OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Unemployed workers in Alabama are able to receive additional unemployment benefits as a result of the economic stimulus program. Alabamians receiving unemployment benefits started receiving an additional $25 per week on Tuesday.

"I know that during these tough economic times, every little bit helps," said Tom Surtees, Director of Industrial Relations in a press release. "DIR is acting quickly to ensure that unemployed Alabamians get the additional benefit in a timely manner," Surtees added.

However, there are some critics. "There are lots of people hurting and they could use an extra twenty-five dollars a week, but I have to wonder how far that extra $25 can be stretched by most families," Blake McGilberry, a job seeker said.

The Department of Industrial Relations says they are acting quickly to ensure that unemployed Alabamians receive the additional benefit in a timely manner. The first $25 benefit will be paid out for the week ending February 28th. Those receiving unemployment benefits should already be able to see those extra dollars on their bank statement.
