COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Today kicked off the Claflin Homecoming Jubilee starting with a parade from the school ending at the Liberty Theater.

Alumni and the community celebrates the history of the school and looks forward to the much different future of the school.

Plans are finally moving forward for the historic Claflin school on the 5th Ave. near Uptown Columbus.

“44 affordable apartment units are planned for the property, which will include 18 new units in the former schoolyard area--also with access to education, reading programs, free health screenings and many more resources,” says Reverend Richard Jessie.

The school, a staple in the community and the county’s first-ever school for African-Americans, was established in 1868.

The school will be celebrating 150 years in September.

News Leader 9 is giving you an inside look and bringing you up to speed on plans for the rejuvenation to the school.
