Body found on Clover Ave. in Columbus after kids take pictures of body to school, officials say
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - An investigation is underway after a body was found in South Columbus behind a Boys and Girls Club facility.
“I just hate to see anyone die like this,” said Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton.
Newton said students at a school in Columbus were walking in the field when they found a body and began taking pictures and showing others at their school. That’s when a teacher saw the photos and notified police.
“I’m just glad the teacher was observant, and I want to thank her for this,” said Newton.
The call led officials to a field between the Boys and Girls Club facility and the Lumpkin Park Apartments. Newton said the victim is believed to be in his late 60s and he’s believed to be someone officials have been searching for.
"He is a missing person, I understand. We feel a little confident that we know who he is, but we’re not absolutely sure. Detectives are talking to family and a caretaker,” Newton explained.
He is believed to have been in the field for days through the rain and the cold weather. As of now, officials said they believe no foul play is detected, but they’re still pending results from an autopsy.
“He was laying on the ground and you know it’s rained with the dew and everything. I will be calling Atlanta to set up a time for him to get an autopsy to find out what the cause of death is,” said Newton.
Lieutenant Greg Touchberry said their homicide unit is no long working this case. The robbery and sssault unit is now working the investigation.
