MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A patient suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after arrival at Baptist Medical Center East Wednesday morning, according to the hospital.
Hospital spokesperson Kadie Agnew said the patient was alone when they were brought by ambulance to the hospital Wednesday morning and that the shooting happened after they arrived.
Agnew said the patient - it’s not clear if they are male or female - arrived alone, did not have any visitors, and could not have obtained a gun any other way.
She said the Montgomery Police Department responded to the hospital to conduct an investigation, but added that privacy laws prevent the hospital from commenting on the patient’s status.
Agnew said there was never a threat to other patients, employees or visitors, and the hospital was not placed on lockdown, though an all clear was called overhead to ensure safety.
“All current security protocols were followed today,” Agnew added. “As an organization, we continually review and enhance security protocols and procedures to ensure the maximum safety of our patients, staff and physicians. We will do the same following this situation.”
